Tom Schiller was born in Denver, Colorado and grew up in Missouri. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and received art degrees from Drury University and the University of Kansas. His long career teaching visual arts began in 1998 while working as a full-time artist-potter. His prize-winning clay work has been featured in several magazines and books. His artwork features paintings on plates and clay works. In 2005, Tom stopped making pots and began the transition back into painting on canvas and paper. His current paintings are abstract to varying degrees but most always are grounded in familiar imagery and subject matter. Using intense colors and contour line variations, the result is a constant experimentation with formal and structural invention and spatial ambiguities. The final work is an image which looks familiar but is actually an invented subject that incorporates occasional surrealist elements and simple visual surprises.
